British Open 2010 – John Daly has a great start at St. Andrews
If you are a big golf fan you know this is where it all started. At least this is where we think it did. When the name of your golf club has both the words Ancient and Royal on it, you sure know this is as fine as it gets when it comes to the golfing world. The Open Championship was first played on October 17, 1860 at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. In 1873, they made the move and played at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
Whenever the British Open returns to St. Andrews, there is some sort of mysticism and devotion among the sport’s purist. This is one of the finest most traditional tournaments in the world. And it is played on a course that dates back to at least the 16th Century. Every six years or so, the British Open finds its way to the 18-hole course. The legendary course futures seven huge double greens. Both the golf course and the competition have both seen great players over its plentiful greens.
The great Jack Nicklaus won here twice, in 1970 and 1978, and this was also the golf course where the great Tiger Woods made one of the most impressive games ever played when he finished 19 under par.
This time around it is John Dally who is making it back to the top of the sports news headlines. He has been around long enough to see both great accomplishment and utter failure, some might risk saying. It is as if he was back with revenge. He has come back to the turf where he won his last big tournament over a decade ago, and on the first day, and against all odds Dally hit a 6 under par 66 on his first day at St. Andrews.
John Dally underwent surgery a couple of year ago after he hit the 300 lb mark and when it was just plain evident that his lifestyle had begun to affect his game. It was evident that the player once nicknamed “The Wild Thing” was starting to loose his wild edge.
And yet, it seems as if the 44-year-old golfer might be back at his best ever. Tomorrow is sure going to be a wild game between the big shots. After round 1, Rory McIlroy stands atop the standings. He is 9 under par and has stayed close to the 63 mark. Dally is tied for third with 5 other players while Tiger Woods sits safe at 8th.
